"After winning Rookie of the Year honors in 1968, Bahnsen wasn't immune to the 'sophomore jinx' in 1969. He got off to a very bad start, losing eight of his first nine games and winding up with a 9-16 record. Toward the end of the season, Stan came back; he managed a 3.83 ERA and had 130 strikeouts, second highest on the staff.
Early this year Stan, now 25, married an American Airlines stewardess. It may well have been the happy start of a great year for him. Ralph Houk confidently expects it to be. So does Stan.
Stan's fast ball is still rated as one of the best in the league. Carl Yastrzemski considers him the fastest thrower in the league. In his first major league appearance, September 6, 1966 at Fenway Park, Stan struck out the side in the first inning, chopping down Joe Foy, Yastrzemski and Tony Conigliaro. He has hurled two no-hitters, one of them a seven-inning perfect game while with Syracuse.
Stan is still doing Army Reserve duty and lives in Fort Lee, New Jersey."
-The New York Yankees Official 1970 Yearbook
"After winning Rookie of the Year honors in 1968, Stan suffered from the proverbial sophomore jinx in 1969 when he lost his first six decisions and wound up with only nine wins in 25 decisions. He still managed, however, to post a respectable ERA of 3.83 and had 130 strikeouts, second highest on the staff.
He led the club in strikeouts in his rookie year of 1968, when he had 162, and also in ERA with a 2.06 mark. Stan's fastball is still rated as one of the best in the league and there is no reason to believe that he can't bounce back to a much more productive year.
Stan had quite an auspicious debut in the major leagues on September 9, 1966 at Fenway Park when he struck out the side in his first inning of pitching, fanning Joe Foy, Carl Yastrzemski and Tony Conigliaro. Yaz has since labeled him as the fastest thrower in the American League.
He has hurled two no-hitters in Organized Baseball- July 17, 1966 with Toledo and the other a seven-inning perfect game on July 9, 1967 while with Syracuse. Stan was the Yankees' 4th selection in the 1965 Free Agent Draft.
Stan married airline hostess Connie Sayre in January."
