1990 Albany-Colonie Yankees Yearbook Notes

New York Yankees AA Farm Club (Eastern League)

DEDICATED TO FRITZ
"The 1990 edition of the Albany-Colonie Yankees Yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Frederick 'Fritz' Walker, the Official Photographer and Number One Fan of the Albany-Colonie Yankees.
From day one, Fritz was an avid backer of first the A-C A's and then the Yankees. The former professional umpire loved to spar with his modern-day Eastern League counterparts and his gravelly voice could be heard all over Heritage Park.
On November 9, 1989, Fritz passed away, leaving a void in sports in the Capital District. Not only was he a big fan of the Yankees, but of the Albany Patroons as well. Many times if you attended a road game of either team, you would find Fritz there.
The Albany-Colonie Yankees extended to the Walker family our sympathies on the untimely passing of our friend Fritz. To be sure, Heritage Park will not be the same without him.
To honor Fritz Walker, each year the Walker Trophy will be awarded to the Albany-Colonie player voted Most Valuable Player each season. The trophy is donated by Vellano Bros. of Latham."

CHARLES ESHBACH - EASTERN LEAGUE PRESIDENT
"Eastern League President Charlie Eshbach begins his ninth season as its leader, following the most successful year, attendance-wise, in the history of the league. With new teams in London, Ontario; Canton, Ohio; and Hagerstown, Maryland, attendance soared to a new standard of 1,272,812, breaking the old mark set in 1939 by almost two hundred thousand.
Eshbach's baseball career started in 1974 when he took a job as Assistant General Manager at Elmira in the New York-Penn League. In 1975, he rose to General Manager in Bristol, Connecticut, the Boston Red Sox EL farm team. In 1981, he was named President of the Eastern League and in 1988, for a short time, served as President of the National Association, which runs all minor league baseball.
Eshbach has been honored for many of his efforts as EL President. In 1984, he received the Warren Giles Award, which honors the Minor League President of the Year. He also won the Phil Piton Award, given by Umpire Development, an organization that has been important to Charlie for years.
Eshbach makes several trips to Heritage Park each season. The last two seasons he has been here on the final night for the Championship Trophy presentation. Charlie is looking forward to the league setting another attendance record in 1990.
He and his wife Ann-Marie reside, along with their two children, in Connecticut."

ALBANY-COLONIE YANKEES PRESIDENT BATTING 1.000
"In the world of baseball, Paul Keating is two for two as President of the Albany-Colonie Yankees. Keating has been President for two seasons, and in both seasons the A-C Yankees have won the Eastern League Championship.
The Fitchburg, Massachusetts native has had a lifelong love affair with the game of baseball, as a youngster collecting memorabilia, as a high school first baseman, to A-C Yankees President. He is an avid runner today, a carryover from his track days at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering.
Keating, an accomplished pilot, is also Treasurer and Chief Executive Officer of P.J. Keating Company and President of its many subsidiaries, including the Keating Sports Group.
Keating has reaffirmed his commitment to 'quality family entertainment at Heritage Park.' He is looking forward to 'another championship season for A-C.'
Paul and his family reside in Massachusetts."

-1990 Albany-Colonie Yankees Yearbook

A.C. GENERAL MANAGER RALPH ACAMPORA
"For Ralph Acampora, his sophomore season was even more successful than his rookie year as Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the Albany-Colonie Yankees. Two seasons, two league championships for A-C since Ralph took over as G.M. of the Yankees' Double-A club. Looking at 1990, Acampora says the A-C Yanks will again 'be very competitive' and all who attend games at Heritage Park 'will be entertained not only on the field but in the rest of the park.' Ralph is committed to folks having lots of fun at Heritage.
A Connecticut native, Ralph graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, and from Southern Connecticut University with a degree in economics. Prior to joining the Yankees, Acampora was with the parent P.J. Keating Company in the construction and materials industry.
Ralph says it's a plus for A-C to be 'part of the New York Yankees rebuilding farm system under George Bradley.' He also reminds everyone that, 'Heritage Park is still the most affordable entertainment in the area.' He also noted the new drainage system and backstop installed at Heritage Park will greatly aid the team and add to better views of the action for the fans. Acampora added that he and A-C President Paul Keating will make every effort 'to keep prices at Heritage Park as affordable as possible.' "

TIM WESTON - TRAINER
"For the second straight season, Tim Weston will be the trainer for the Albany-Colonie Yankees. For the 24-year-old Weston, it will be his third year with the Yankee organization, starting with Oneonta in 1988.
Tim is a native of Waldoboro, Maine, about a mile's drive from Portland. He graduated from the University of Maine, majoring in physical education and sports medicine. While at Maine, Tim was a trainer for the football and hockey squads.
Looking to hook on in the major leagues someday, Weston brought a very positive approach in 1989 and is looking forward to the challenge of the 1990 season."

THE EASTERN LEAGUE
A Pathway to the Stars
"In 1989, 335 former Eastern Leaguers saw action in major league uniforms. The Pittsburgh Pirates led the way with 29 ex-Eastern Leaguers, while the Cleveland Indians had the most EL grads in the American League with 27. Ryne Sandberg (Reading), Mark Davis (Reading), George Bell (Reading), Wade Boggs (Bristol), Roger Clemens (New Britain), Bobby Bonilla (Nashua) and Mickey Tettleton (Albany) are just a few of the former EL players who enjoyed big years in the majors in 1989."

YANKEE CARAVAN
"After an absence of several years (early 1970s), the New York Yankee Caravan was resumed and came to the  Capital District. It took place in February as thoughts turned to baseball.
Arranged in cooperation with the Albany-Colonie Yankees, Manager Bucky Dent, players Steve Balboni, Lee Guetterman and Jimmy Jones took the trip up the Thruway from New York. Broadcaster and Yankee great Phil Rizzuto also was here.
Following a press conference in the morning, the contingent went to the Albany Medical Center's Children's Hospital where they greeted many patients, talking to them, having their pictures taken and giving out Yankee gifts. The appearance of the Yankee entourage certainly brightened the day of the kids in the hospital. Many an autograph was signed as evidenced by the kids' faces. Rizzuto also took some time to see some of the older patients, and from the looks on their faces when he walked into their rooms, you knew they were happy to see the Scooter.
From the hospital, the group went to Crossgates Mall, where they greeted the public. Fans could get their pictures taken with Dent and the rest of the Yankees as well as receive that coveted autograph. Long lines greeted the caravan as they arrived.
Judging from the fun day, it will be repeated in 1991."

LAPOINT'S KIDS
"For the second year in a row, New York Yankee pitcher Dave LaPoint has graciously donated thousands of tickets for area underprivileged children to attend Albany-Colonie Yankee games in 1990. Look for LaPoint's kids in their section in the third base stands."

-1990 Albany Colonie Yankees Yearbook

FIRST BASE CAFE
"In 1990, the Albany-Colonie Yankees will once again be offering catered parties at the First Base Cafe. The Cafe is located next to right field, just past the first base stands. It contains outdoor cafe style tables with oversized umbrellas, all in a beautifully landscaped setting.
A party at the First Base Cafe is a terrific way to say thank you to your valued clients and or employees, or as a way to spend an enjoyable outing with your social group or organization.
There are four affordable dinner selections to choose from. The cafe offers everything from hamburgers and hot dogs to barbeque chicken, barbeque ribs, and sirloin steak. Also included with each dinner is a salad bar, beverage, and ice cream. Each person in your party will receive a reserved ticket to the game, and your group's name will be announced over the public address system, as well as being displayed across the message center scoreboard in center field. All parties are scheduled to begin one and one-half hours before game time and will conclude at the start of the game.
Whether you have 25 people or 500 people, a party at the First Base Cafe is a unique way to spend a day at the ball park. Be sure to stop by the Yankee offices under the home plate grandstand for more information reservations, or call the Yankee offices."

We look forward to seeing you with us on August 18. Once again, we'll all enjoy the Clown Prince of Baseball. "

1990 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

WELCOME
"Welcome to another exciting year of Yankees baseball.
This is the 87th anniversary of the most dominant team in the history of professional sports. The Yankees have won 22 World Championships and 33 American League pennants in 87 years.
While most teams are still looking for their first championship or can only point to one standout period in their history, the Yankees can boast several distinct eras within their overall dominance of major league baseball.
Yankee greatness was sprouted by the combined talents of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. From Ruth's arrival in New York in 1920 to his departure from the Yankees in 1935, the Pinstripers won four World Championships and seven American League pennants.
Joe DiMaggio's arrival in 1936 started the tradition of great Yankee center fielders, and with his retirement in 1951, the Yankees had added 10 more World Series victories and 11 more pennants.
Mickey Mantle picked up the torch from there, contributing to six additional World Championships and another 11 league pennants that were won before he retired in 1969.
After a dry spell of several years, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson had the Yankees back on track in the late '70s, winning two more World Championships and three AL titles.
Now the team has been reshaped and regrouped and is ready to add to the Yankees' rich tradition. We don't know which Yankees in today's lineup will become legends. But already names like Don Mattingly, Dave Righetti, Dave Winfield and a host of others are beginning to leave their mark in the Yankee record book.
The Yankees originally joined the American League in 1903 and were known as the 'Highlanders.' Around 1913 the nickname 'Yankees' was adopted and a couple of years later pinstripes appeared on their uniforms. Their first American League pennant was won in 1921 and they claimed their first World Championship in 1923. In 1929, the Yankees were the first team to add numbers to the backs of their uniforms. The Yankee Pride and Tradition was on its way.
Now in 1990 the Yankees proudly wear the same uniforms, play in the same ballpark, in the same great city and carry on the same traditions established when they won their first World Championship.
We take great pride in welcoming you to the 88th season of Yankee baseball ... be a part of it ... as the Bronx Bombers and their fans strive for yet another world title."

YANKEES TRADITION: MONUMENT PARK
"It's something that is proud, proven, nurtured and, of course, appreciated. Appreciated by droves of Yankee followers who take the time to learn about the rich history of the New York Yankees. For the sixth consecutive year, the Yankees have taken that appreciation one step further by allowing fans to visit the Monument Park section of Yankee Stadium behind the outfield wall. The three monuments and 18 plaques will again open to public viewing.
To make Monument Park more accessible, the left-center field wall was moved in before the start of the 1985 season.
The left field wall was again moved about 15 feet in 1988 to make room for the park's latest renovation. Now expanded, it is roomy enough for the thousands of fans who visit it each year.
The Park, located between the two bullpens, is a smorgasbord of Yankee tradition honoring the Bronx Bombers' most illustrious members.
The first monument was dedicated in 1932 to legendary manager Miller Huggins who guided the Yankees to six American League pennants and three World Championships. Huggins, who was at the Yankee helm from 1918-29, didn't live to see the dedication; he died three years before.
His monument reads: 'As a tribute to a splendid character who made priceless contributions to baseball and on this field brought glory to the New York club of the American League.'
In April 1940, the first plaque was placed on the center field wall in tribute to Jacob Ruppert, the late owner who had built Yankee Stadium and brought the tradition of winning to the Yankees.
Two more monuments followed in 1941 for Lou Gehrig and in 1949 for slugger Babe  Ruth.
Gehrig's plaque described the Hall of Fame first baseman as: 'A man, a gentleman and great ballplayer whose amazing record of 2,130 consecutive games should stand for all time. This memorial is a tribute from the Yankee players to their beloved captain and teammate.'
Ruth's simple says: 'A great ballplayer, a great man, a great American.'
Later plaques were placed in center field for general manager Edward Barrow and the Yankees' two great center fielders, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle.
Originally, the monuments and plaques were part of the playing field. The monuments and flagpole were located in straight-away center field on the warning track about ten feet in front of the wall. Sometimes, long hits and fly balls forced fielders to go through or behind the monuments to retrieve the long drives.
As much a tradition as the monuments and plaques themselves was the tradition of allowing fans to exit Yankee Stadium through the center field gates via the warning track, to pause and reflect on the achievements of these great men.
When Yankee Stadium was closed for renovation in 1974 and 1975, the monuments and plaques were relocated to the new Monument Park. However, fans were not allowed to exit via the warning track and viewing of Monument Park was only allowed at a great distance.
In 1976, two more plaques were added memorializing managers Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel. Then in 1980, plaques were dedicated to Thurman Munson and Elston Howard.
Roger Maris' plaque was added on Old Timers' Day 1984, Phil Rizzuto's in August 1985, and Billy Martin's in August 1986. In 1987, Hall of Fame pitchers Whitey Ford and Lefty Gomez were honored with plaques. In 1988, on Hall of Fame Day, Hall of Fame catchers Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra were honored with plaques. Last season, the Yankees honored pitching great Allie Reynolds with a plaque.
Two other plaques commemorating the visits of Pope Paul VI in 1965 and Pope John Paul II in 1979 have been placed by the Knights of Columbus."

MINOR LEAGUE DEPARTMENT
"Developing minor league talent and at the same time having winning teams- that is what the Yankee farm system did in 1989. Now, after sending a number of players to 'The Show' and producing championships in three of five leagues a year ago, the Yankees will try to repeat that success in 1990.
There will be a whole different look this year in Columbus, home of the Yankees' Triple-A team. In 1989, a number of key men for the Clippers became major contributors in New York. The Clippers lost manager Bucky Dent, hitting coach Champ Summers, and players Roberto Kelly, Alvaro Espinoza and Bob Geren- who started with or were promoted to the big club and were key contributors. And still, the team finished 77-69, good for second place in the Western Division- four games behind.
'Our top priority is to produce players who can help us at the major league level,' said Mitch Lukevics, director of minor league operations for the Yankees. 'In that respect, we were very successful last year.'
This year the Clippers are managed by Carl 'Stump' Merrill, who is well-respected in the Yankee organization. Stump managed at every level of the Yankee farm system from 1978-84 and parts of 1985 and 1988, finishing first in five of his seven full seasons and second the other two. He was then a coach with the Yankees [under Yogi Berra in 1985 and] from 1986-87.
Merrill takes over a team that, despite losing a number of players, is still considered a veteran squad. Outfielder/first baseman Kevin Maas, who had a .320 average in 1989 while being hampered by a knee injury, will start in Columbus this year. So too will outfielder Oscar Azocar, who opened a lot of eyes last year by hitting .292 for the Clippers after a mid-season promotion from Double-A ball.
On the mound for the Clippers this year is a trio of young right-handed prospects. Dave Eiland, who saw some action for the Yankees in 1988 and '89, was 9-4 with a 3.76 ERA for Columbus last year. Bob Davidson made a successful mid-season jump to Triple-A, where he went 8-5 with a 1.83 ERA, allowing only 71 hits in 93 innings pitched. Another prospect the Yankees are high on is Mark Leiter, who made the jump all the way from Class-A to Columbus last year. Leiter, whose brother Al was a lefty starter for the Yankees, was 9-6 with the Clippers last season.
'With a lot of Double-A players making the jump to Triple-A last year, this year we are fielding a young yet experienced club in Columbus,' said Lukevics. 'It'll be a team with a lot of ability.'
The prize of the farm system last year was the Double-A Albany-Colonie Yankees. In addition to promoting a number of players to Columbus, these Yankees were an outstanding 92-48, winning the Eastern League championship for the second straight year.
'They had an outstanding year,' said Lukevics. 'They did one of the hardest things there is in sports, and that's to win when you are expected to win.'
Last year's team featured many veteran players and an experienced manager in Buck Showalter, who this year is a coach on the major league staff in New York.
Catcher/outfielder/third baseman Jim Leyritz, who led the league with a .315 average, will most likely move up. Same for first baseman Rob Sepanek, who led the league with 22 home runs; second baseman Andy Stankiewicz, who hit .267 and led the league in runs, stolen bases and sacrifice flies; and catcher John Ramos, who batted .273 for Albany in 1989.
Three top pitching prospects should also get a chance with Columbus this year. They are right-hander Royal Clayton (16-4), southpaw Steve Adkins (12-1) and righty  Scott Kamieniecki (10-9)- who led the league with 140 strikeouts.
Expect a whole new set of faces at Albany this year, starting with the manager. Though he'll be making his managerial debut in the Yankee organization this year, Rick Down is an experienced and capable baseball man. The roving hitting instructor in the Yankee system last year, his coaching/managerial experience dates back to 1976 and includes two years (1987-88) with the Angels on the major league level.
The 72-66 Prince William Cannons had a tremendous comeback last year en route to winning the Carolina League championship. After going 30-39 and finishing fourth in the first half of the season, these Yankees went 42-27 to finish first in the second half.
This year Gary Denbo, an outstanding young manager, will take over as manager at Prince William. Ironically, Denbo was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds' Greensboro team last year, which is now part of the Yankee organization.
'This year we'll have a mixed squad at Prince William,' says Lukevics. 'A lot of guys who were in Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota and Oneonta last year will be in Prince William this season.'
Among those expected to move up in 1990 are first baseman J. T. Snow, who had an outstanding year in Oneonta, and outfielder Sherman Obando, tabbed as the top prospect in the New York-Penn League while with Oneonta in '89. Pitcher Mike Gardella, who led the New York-Penn League in saves last year; Jim Wiley, an impressive 20-year-old who showed a lot of promise in Sarasota; and Cullen Hartzog, who was a promising pitcher in Ft. Lauderdale, should end up in Prince William in 1990.
Ft. Lauderdale had the toughest season of all Yankee teams in 1989, finishing 11th (61-77) in the 14-team Florida State League. This year the team will be managed by Mike Hart, who last year was manager of the Double-A Reading Phillies.
The Yankees will be moving a number of players who were in rookie ball last year to Class-A in Ft. Lauderdale. Among them are pitchers Russ Springer (RHP) and Jim Haller (LHP), and catcher Brian Johnson. All three were in Sarasota last year.
'We're looking at a younger club at Ft. Lauderdale, which we hope will be somewhat competitive,' says Lukevics. 'Any time you get younger kids in the Florida State League it's a tough go because it's a very experienced league.'
That is why the Yankees acquired the Greensboro team in the last off-season. 'The South Atlantic is generally considered a slower level Single-A league than the Florida State or Carolina Leagues,' says Lukevics. 'We felt having a team from our organization in a slower league would better enhance our player development.'
Greensboro's manager this year is Brian Butterfield, a young man who has coached in the Yankee organization since 1984. In 1988, his first year as a manager, Butterfield led Sarasota to a championship.
The team will be comprised of a number of young, first full-year players. Among those expected to start the year at Greensboro are left-handed pitcher Sterling Hitchcock, rated by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Gulf Coast League for Sarasota in 1989, and third baseman Andy Fox, rated as the second best prospect in the league. Others making the jump are right-handed pitcher Mark Hutton, a 6-6, 210-pound native of Australia who was 6-2 for Oneonta last year, and outfielder Jesse Robertson, who will be promoted from Sarasota.
Rosters of the Oneonta and Tampa Yankees will mostly be comprised of players selected in the amateur draft from June 5-7. Others on those teams will come from extended spring training, the two-month session for players not making any of the other clubs. Oneonta will begin New York-Penn League play on June 21, and Tampa will begin action in the Gulf Coast League on June 18.
Last year, in Butterfield's first year there, Oneonta went 48-27 and finished in second place. Taking over as manager this year is Trey Hillman, after serving as a coach at Prince William in '89. Hillman makes his managerial debut this season.
Tampa finished 41-22 last year, winning a second consecutive Gulf Coast League championship. These Yankees will also be led by a Yankee coach making his managerial debut. Glenn Sherlock, a coach at Albany last year, will be managing Tampa in 1990."
