1968 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

WELCOME BACK TO YANKEE STADIUM ... AND THE '68 SEASON
"'Year II of the New Yankee Era' is here As Mike Burke, Lee MacPhail and Ralph Houk have said, the Yankees are dedicated to a 'go young' policy as the club builds back up to pennant contention.
The Yankees are proud indeed of their heritage of 29 American League pennant winners and 20 World Champions and of such legendary baseball heroes as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and others.
Now there are many new faces to join the youthful veterans - incomparable Mickey Mantle, Tommy Tresh, Joe Pepitone, Mel Stottlemyre, Al Downing, Horace Clarke, Steve Whitaker, Bill Robinson, Fritz Peterson and the other popular Yankees. 'Down on the Farms' are such likely future Yankees as Ron Blomberg, Steve Kline, Bob Elliott and host of other promising Yankee Stadium stars of tomorrow.
The task of rebuilding has been faced squarely and enormous progress made. We believe you will enjoy this new edition of the Yankees and will have many fun-filled moments at attractively refurbished Yankee Stadium.
A warm welcome to all fans ... young and old. We hope to see you here often in the promising new 1968 baseball season."

YANKEE YOUTH
"The New York Yankee spring training roster revealed the average age of the Yankees to be 24.87 years, the youngest in several generations, and perhaps in club history."

NEW INFIELDERS
"New faces on the left side of the infield are Bobby Cox and Gene Michael. Cox, obtained from the Atlanta Braves' organization over the winter, sparked the Richmond club to the International League championship last season. He is an aggressive player and hits with some power ... Michael, a far-ranging and switch-hitting shortstop, was obtained from the Dodgers. Cox faces competition from Mike Ferraro and Michael from veteran shortstop Ruben Amaro."

PROUDLY SERVING OUR COUNTRY
"A couple of pretty fair-hitting shortstops - not available to the Yankees this year - are Jerry Kenney, 22, who hit .310 for the Yankees at the end of last season (and has never hit below .291), and Bobby Murcer, another left-handed hitting shortstop, with good power. Both are in military service this year. Murcer and pitcher Jim Fink are serving their second years in military uniform."

YANKEE ATTENDANCE
"Despite the most exciting pennant race in its history, with four clubs battling down to the last weekend for the title, the Yankees continued to be the top attraction in the American League last season. The Yankees drew approximately 40,000 more than their nearest rival, the colorful Minnesota Twins.
This spring, the Bombers again attracted large crowds along the grapefruit circuit. On a novel four day trip to Mexico City, the Yanks brought four capacity crowds to Social Security Stadium for a record Series total of over 100,000 enthusiastic fans."

ANNUAL YANKEE CAP, BAT AND BALL DAYS SET FOR YOUNG FANS
"These popular three gift days are back on the Yankees' home schedule again this year. Just look at the attractions being offered on Cap, Bat, and Ball Days!
Leading off on Sunday, April 28, when the pennant-contending Detroit Tigers are at Yankee Stadium for the first doubleheader of the season ... it will be CAP DAY! Truly a great combination event.
BAT DAY on Sunday afternoon, June 9 will be held in conjunction with the Yankee-California Angels twin bill. And BALL DAY will be staged on Sunday, July 7 when the Yankees host the rough Baltimore Orioles in another bargain doubleheader. Three great Sunday twin bills for these popular Yankee gift days.
In addition, early in the season when young fans are out of school for the annual spring and Easter vacation, the Yankees will offer all students an attractive, colorful book cover free on Monday and Tuesday, April 15 and 16 when the Yankees entertain the Oakland Athletics for 2:00 P.M. afternoon games.
These book covers, which can be fitted around almost any size text or other school books, will feature the attractive Yankee insignia, a new team photograph, autographs of all the stars and a list of Yankee records. Each of the first 25,000 students attending these games will receive a Yankee book cover, as long as the supply lasts.
For Cap Day, Bat Day and Ball Day, the same regulations as in preceding years will apply. A cap, bat or ball will be given away free to each young fan, 14 and under, attending those respective days and accompanied by an adult. One adult can bring one youngster or an entire team and each qualifying young fan will receive the gift of the day. Boys AND girls are eligible for these gifts. Naturally, these attractive Yankee souvenirs will be given out only on paid admissions.
The Yankee gift cap is a fine replica of the official Yankee player cap with the 'NY' embroidered in silk on the front, plus regulation sweatband, eyelets, and green, glare-resistant visors. The cap has been designed to fit virtually all youth head sizes.
Bat Day on June 9 looms as one of the really big days of the year. Yankee Bat Days have attracted the largest crowds of the major league seasons in each of the last three years. Again this year, a fine quality Little League bat will include the autograph of a popular Yankee player, plus the Yankee team name on each. The bats, made by Hillerich & Bradsby of Louisville, Kentucky, measure 29 to 31 inches and weigh 23 to 25 ounces.
A Wilson horsehide covered ball, with the official Little League designation and the New York Yankee team name on each, will be given away on July 7. The balls have a cork and rubber center, 108 stitches, and can be used in games or retained as souvenirs."

MAYOR'S TROPHY GAME
"The Yankees will play the Mets at Shea Stadium on Monday night, May 27 in the sixth annual Mayor's Trophy Game for the benefit of the youngsters on Greater New York's sandlots. The visiting team has won each of the preceding games. More than $540,000 has been raised to date for the sandlot baseball program. Tickets are on sale for this worthy benefit at both ballparks and at all Yankee and Met ticket outlets."

MEMORIAL DAY
"The Yankees' only home holiday date of the season is Memorial Day - Thursday, May 30 - with the Washington Senators. The doubleheader will start at 1:00 P.M."

ANOTHER GREAT OLD TIMERS' DAY PLANNED
"The original Old Timers' Day, the Yankees' 22nd annual salute to nostalgia, will be held at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon, August 10, when the pennant-favored Minnesota Twins will be Stadium visitors. This colorful event, recognized throughout baseball, again will feature young veterans and Hall of Famers, including some old-timers never before back for this event.
Details of the Yankees' official 22nd annual Old Timers' Day classic will be announced shortly. But don't wait! Order your tickets for this colorful and significant event now."

FREE PROGRAM INSERT FOR DOUBLEHEADERS
"When you attend a Yankee home doubleheader this year, be sure to buy an official Yankee scorecard, which will contain a free scoring insert sheet for the center spread scoreblock area. Score both games while buying only one scorebook."

-The 1968 New York Yankees Scorecard and Official Program

LAYTON PLAYS HAMMOND ORGAN
"Eddie Layton, one of the nation's outstanding organists and a recording star, plays the Hammond Organ at all Yankee home games. Come to the Stadium early, watch infield and batting practice, and listen to Eddie play the Hammond Organ for your entertainment."

POPULAR TRIPLE-S BLUE STAMPS AGAIN OFFERED FOR YANKEE GAMES
"For the first time this year, box and reserved seats can be obtained for Triple-S Blue Stamps at any Triple-S Redemption Center.
For the third consecutive year, the Triple-S Blue Stamp Company will award 10,000 stamps to a worthy organization each time a home run is hit by a Yankee in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will select a charity or other non-profit organization to be the recipient of the home run Blue Stamps for each home series. The awards will be made in the name of the Yankee players who hit the homers. The organizations receiving the stamps may redeem them for a choice of hundreds of useful items in the Triple-S catalog.
General Admission tickets are also available in exchange for Triple-S Blue Stamps, in addition to the box and reserved seats."

STATION WHN OFFERS YANKEE GAME INFORMATION ON RADIO
"When you are not sure about the weather or if the Yankee game will be played, the easiest way to get an answer is to tune radio station WHN at 1050 on the AM dial. If you want information about the Yankees, WHN offers that, too, at regular intervals.
Game and weather information will be given each noon and again on Marv Albert's sports show each evening. The Yankees will notify WHN immediately regarding any information pertaining to the club and Yankee games. So, it is suggested that for Yankee information, you tune 1050- WHN.
Marv Albert does various pre- and post-game radio shows around each Yankee broadcast on WHN. Many are live from Yankee Stadium."
