1969 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

HIGH HOPES FOR A BIG YEAR ... 1969
"'Better Days Are Ahead' was the Yankee pledge when the club hit bottom in 1966. A notch better in '67 ... an exciting, surprise first-division finish in 1968 ... And here we are in promising 1969.
The youngest and probably fastest team in Yankee history will represent New York in the new 'American League East' as major league baseball expands to 24 teams in this Centennial Year of professional baseball. All five 1968 first division clubs are in the 'American League East.' Competing in the same section with the World Champion Detroit Tigers, the contending Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians plus Ted Williams' Washington Senators is a real challenge to the young Yankees.
But this colorful, vibrant, aggressive team came back from a successful spring training ready for the challenge.
Respectful of its heritage of 29 American League pennants and 20 World Championships, this Yankee club represents the new era of Mike Burke, Lee MacPhail and Ralph Houk ... dedicated to bringing the Yankees back into contention."

NEW STRIKE ZONE AND LOWER MOUND IN 1969
"To create a better balance between offense and defense, two moves have been made this year by the rules committee of baseball. The strike zone of 1969 will be that space over home plate which is between the batter's armpits and the top of his knees when he assumes his natural stance. Last year it was between the top of the batter's shoulders and his knees.
The height of the pitching mound this season has been reduced from 15 inches to 10 inches above the level of home plate."

YANKEE NEWCOMERS
"Mike Kekich is a hard-throwing left-hander obtained from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for Andy Kosco. Mike hasn't done much winning up to this year, but he has a strong arm, great desire and the ability to win.
Len Boehmer is a rookie of 27 who filled in at first, second and third during spring training. A dangerous hitter, Len is getting his first real chance this season."

GREATEST YANKEE PLAYERS EVER
"In celebration of professional baseball's 100th anniversary, the New York Yankees and other major league clubs are conducting polls to determine the greatest players ever. After a fan-popularity vote early in the season, the Baseball Writers Association will take the fans' recommendations and select the GREATEST PLAYERS EVER to coincide with the All-Star Game in Washington on July 22. The winners will be introduced at the Centennial Dinner to be held in Washington on Monday night, July 21.
Here at Yankee Stadium, fans may vote to select the greatest Yankees at each position. The winning and runner-up teams will be announced during the season by the Yankees. You'll find it's fun to select your favorite all-time Yankee team. Will your outfield include Ruth, DiMaggio and Mantle? Do you pick Yogi Berra over Bill Dickey behind the plate? And how do you select among Whitey Ford, Herb Pennock, Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, Allie Reynolds and Vic Raschi? And how about second base? Joe Gordon, Bobby Richardson or Tony Lazzeri?
And who's the greatest Yankee ever? The Yankees want to pay him honors. Tell us who are the greatest in your opinion. You can vote by depositing this scorecard ballot or your own ballot at any of the receptacles in the Yankee Stadium concourses.

YANKEES OFFER BALLS AND BATS TO YOUNG FANS
"Those popular Yankee gift days for young fans are on the early season Stadium schedule. These highly successful events are scheduled early this year so young fans can enjoy their baseballs and bats in seasonal play.
Ball Day is first on the schedule - Sunday afternoon, May 25 when the hard-hitting Minnesota Twins are scheduled for a doubleheader with the Yankees. A Wilson ball, with the official Little League designation and the New York Yankee team name, will be given away. These balls have a cork and rubber center, and 108 stitches.
And then comes Bat Day, the biggest attraction of the major league season. A huge supply of Little League bats, with the New York Yankee name and a simulated autograph of a Yankee star on each one, has been ordered from Hillerich & Bradsby Co., makers of the famous Louisville Slugger. These measure 29 to 31 inches in length and weigh 23 to 25 ounces.
Bat Day is Sunday, June 15, when the new Seattle Pilots are at the Stadium. Despite Mickey Mantle's retirement, a large number of bats will have the autograph of the all-time Yankee hero on them.
Good seats for Ball and Bat days are on sale now at all Yankee ticket reservation outlets and by mail from the Stadium. Regular season ticket prices prevail. Box seats are $4.00 and reserved seats are $2.75, taxes included.
Once again, the gift on each of these dates will be given to each boy and girl, 14 years of age and under, accompanied by an adult."

Approximately 20,000 members of the Knights of Columbus and the New York State Free and Accepted Masons will hold their third annual Fraternal Night event. Two bands and a colorful pre-game program will highlight the occasion."

YANKEES AGAIN OFFER POPULAR TRIPLE-S BLUE STAMP PROGRAM
"Box and reserved seats can be obtained by baseball fans for Triple-S Blue Stamps at any Triple-S Redemption Center. And for the fourth consecutive season, the SSS Blue Stamp Company will award 10,000 stamps to a worthy organization each time a home run is hit by a Yankee in Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees will select a charity or other non-profit organization to be the recipient of the home run Blue Stamps for each Series at the Stadium. The awards will be made in the name of the Yankee players who hit the homers. The organizations receiving the stamps may redeem them for a choice of hundreds of useful items in the Triple-S catalog.
As in the past, general admission tickets also are available in exchange for Triple-S Blue Stamps, in addition to the box and reserved seats."
