"Steve had a slow start in the first half of the '68 season when the whole bullpen slipped into a blue funk. But after the acquisition of Lindy McDaniel, who brought the spark that set fire to the old stockade, Steve had a tremendous last half with him.
The fancy figures compiled by the pitching staff were largely the work of Bahnsen, Stottlemyre, Peterson, McDaniel and Steve Hamilton - who is now in his seventh straight season as a Yankee. Steve was only 2-2 but had an ERA of 2.12 - in contrast to 3.48 the year before. It used to be that Steve was used as a specialist to fan left-handers, but last year he chopped them down on either side.
Now 32, Steve is the Yankee player representative and the A.L. player representative - with good reason. He's intelligent, personable, fair-minded and has a wonderful sense of humor. During the off-season, Steve teaches and coaches at Morehead State University in Kentucky."
-The New York Yankees Official 1969 Yearbook
"A veteran of 12 years in organized baseball, this is his seventh straight year with the Yankees. Originally signed by Cleveland in 1958, Steve was traded to the Senators in 1962. The Yankees acquired him on April 21, 1963 in exchange for Jim Coates. Steve has compiled a won-loss record of 27-13 since coming to the Yankees.
He teamed with Lindy McDaniel to give the Yankees a strong left-right bullpen in the last half of 1968. Steve is especially tough against [left-handed hitters]. He did not allow a home run all last year and has now hurled 46 games, covering 56 innings, without throwing a gopher pitch, dating back to August 26, 1967. He tied with McDaniel for the club lead in saves with 10 each.
Steve is the American League's player representative and has a Master's degree from Morehead State where he is employed as an instructor during the off-season.
Nicknamed 'Hambone' and 'Professor,' Steve played two years of professional basketball with the NBA Minneapolis Lakers."
