1967 Profile: Charley Smith

"He's bounced around as much as an old-time vaudeville trooper, but Charley Smith is probably delighted to make Yankee Stadium his sixth port of call in six big league seasons. The 29-year-old third baseman did his usually competent job with the Cardinals last year, batting .266 with ten homers and 43 RBIs; and he was the NL's top glove man at third base. Charley is efficient if not spectacular.
His hits generally come in clusters, and then he may break into a rash of strikeouts. Coming in on bunts seems to have been his biggest headache at third, but he now makes the play.
Charley broke in with LA, floated to the Phils and White Sox and then had two good seasons with the Mets in 1964 and '65, belting 20 homers one year and 16 the next."

-Jack Zanger, Major League Baseball 1967

"A strong spring performance clinched the third base starting job for Charley Smith. Acquired over the winter in the trade for Roger Maris, the 29-year-old third sacker played excellent ball, both at bat and in the field.
The Yankees are Charley's sixth major league club since he first broke in with the Dodgers late in the 1960 season. He has frequently been traded for 'name' players. Oddly, Charley has been exchanged for a Boyer in each of the last two winters. He replaced Ken Boyer with the Cardinals a year ago and this season he replaces Clete with the Yankees.
A competent fielder with a strong arm and better than average power at the plate, Charley hit 36 home runs in his two seasons with the Mets.
'Last season I started to hit more to right field and it helped my average ... I like New York and it will be a pleasure to be there with the Yankees,' Smith said on learning of the trade last winter."
