"Despite the new free agent draft rules in effect, the Yankees still maintain a large scouting staff of 30 full-time operatives and many more part-time 'bird dog' scouts who roam the country and the Caribbean. Five regular farm clubs and two first-year Rookie League teams (and the Yanks are the only major league organization maintaining two rookie clubs) are used for the training and developing of some 150 prospective Yankees.
Few Yankees ever step directly from the sandlots to fabled Yankee Stadium. The road to the majors for most Yanks is through the club's thorough farm system. Specially chosen minor league managers, coaches and instructors help the youngsters polish the rough edges. The Yankee front office in New York keeps a close watch on the development of each prospect in an effort to speed young players to the parent club."
