1966 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

YANKEES BATTLE BACK AS CONTENDERS IN UPHILL BID FOR PENNANT
"It's not going to be easy, that's for sure! But American League rivals had better not write the Yankees out of pennant contention. Manager Ralph Houk, his coaches and every one of his players believes the Yankees have a chance to win the American League title this year, despite the near-disastrous start in which the Bombers won only four while losing 16 of their first 20 games.
Houk, back in the dugout as field leader of the Bronx Bombers after two-and-a-half years as club General Manager, is a confident leader who engenders enthusiasm from his players and all those around him. He believes in his Yankees and the players believe in themselves. With a break or two- meaning no serious injuries- this might turn out to be the most exciting season at Yankee Stadium in years.
All of the top A.L. contenders will be Stadium visitors in midseason. Four of the top clubs are here in the June homestand. Cleveland's rampaging Indians open the June stand with a Suburban Night game on Wednesday, June 15. The Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox follow. Then in July, the White Sox, Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators, Kansas City A's, California Angels and the champion Minnesota Twins all will be at Yankee Stadium.
Many attractive special events are on tap for the mid-season games, including Bat and Ball Days, Old Timers' Day, Knights of Columbus Day and other occasions.
So there is a lot of fun ahead, and excitement, too, as you plan your visits to Yankee Stadium. You'll see the 'best in baseball' at America's most celebrated and historic ballpark. It was here that so many of the game's greatest players performed and where their deeds have made baseball history.
So a warm welcome to the Home of Champions- Yankee Stadium!"

M&M
"A year older, a year wiser ... but still very much M&M are Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, still the heart of the Yankee batting power. And both have shown to great advantage lately, indicating that they will be ready to drive in many a big run down the stretch of what appears to be an exciting American League race."

GOLD GLOVES
"Three happy Yankees received Rawlings'-Sporting News Gold Glove Awards for their 1965 fielding excellence in a May pre-game ceremony on Bridgeport Day. Leading the American League defensively last season were Bobby Richardson (second base), Tom Tresh (left field) and Joe Pepitone (first base). It was the fifth such award for Richardson. This year Tresh has moved to third base where he is doing an excellent defensive job."

YANKEE ATTENDANCE
"The Yankees continue to be one of baseball's greatest drawing clubs. Perennially the American League leader in road attendance, the Yankees twice in the last five years have attracted more than two million fans on the road, a figure never approached by any other team in all baseball. The all-time record high was reached by Ralph Houk's 1962 Bombers when 2,216,159 paid to see the Yanks in the other nine American League parks. Last year, despite the Yankees' sixth-place finish, they drew a league-leading mark of 1,512,178 for a rain-shortened 79 road games. By the end of the recent road trip, the Yankees had drawn over 600,000 fans on the road this season, well ahead of their league-leading pace of 1965."

SEVEN SUBURBAN NIGHTS AT 7 P.M. SCHEDULED FOR YANKS
"Suburban Nights are back again this year. The Yankee schedule features seven of these Wednesday night features at 7:00 P.M. Suburban Nights have proved popular with New Yorkers as well as suburbanites. Dad has a chance to get home from work, pick up the family and friends, get to Yankee Stadium and still get home from a game at a reasonable hour."

FIRST WEEK OF JULY
"During the first week in July, the Yankees will have their work cut out for them. From July 4th through July 10 at Yankee Stadium, the Houkmen play 11 games on seven dates, including alternate day doubleheaders.
A makeup twin bill has been scheduled for the club's only home holiday game of the season- Monday, July 4th- with the pitching-rich Chicago White Sox of Eddie Stanky. Between games of the holiday twin bill, the colorful championship Hawthorne, New Jersey Caballeros (92 strong) will play and parade as extra entertainment.
A scheduled weekday doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox, old Yankee rivals, will be played at the Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, July 6. Then there will be a makeup 'twi-nighter' on Friday evening (5:00 P.M.), July 8 with Gil Hodges' Washington Senators, followed by scheduled Sunday twin bill with Washington on July 10."

YANKEES PLAN NOVEL "BALL DAY"
"With the huge success of Cap Day in May and another tremendous turnout expected on June 19 for Bat Day on Father's Day, the Yankees are going forward with plans for additional gift days for young fans.
Next on the list is the club's first Ball Day, slated for Saturday afternoon, July 9 when the surprising Washington Senators are Stadium visitors. The Yankees have already purchased a big quantity of first-rate Wilson baseballs, with cork and rubber center and with the Yankee team name attractively printed on the horsehide cover.
These baseballs can be used in competition and will serve as the perfect companion to the bats given out on Bat Day. Of course, these baseballs can also be used as souvenirs of Yankee Stadium.
The baseballs will be given out to all youngsters 14 and under accompanied by an adult. A father can bring his entire family, and each youngster, 14 and under, will receive a baseball. This also applies to the coach of a Little League team. Get a complete supply of balls by bringing your entire team for a fun afternoon at Yankee Stadium, and each qualifying young fan will receive a ball."

OLD TIMERS' DAY HONORS '41 SERIES RIVALS, DIMAG, GEHRIG
"A triple observance of historic Stadium events will highlight the New York Yankees' 20th anniversary Old Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon, July 23. To mark the anniversary of the annual Old Timers' celebration, the Yankees will bring back members of the 1941 Yankees and Dodgers, World Series opponents, on this the quarter-century commemoration of the first Series between these old rivals.
Also to be honored will be Joe DiMaggio, famed Yankee Clipper who set the consecutive game hitting streak record of 56 just 25 years ago this summer. And the Yankees will pay homage to the memory of Lou Gehrig, who passed away on June 2, 1941. Mrs. Eleanor Gehrig, widow of the famed Iron Man, will participate in the brief ceremony.
Acceptances have been received from most of the stars of the '41 Series, plus some other surprise guests not yet announced. The newest members of the Hall of Fame have also been invited. There will be music by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, currently playing for the great summer 'Mardi Gras' show at the Jones Beach Marine Theatre. And there will be other highlights.
The Yankees will play host to the California Angels after the 20th anniversary celebration and game.
Tickets for this 20th anniversary Old Timers' Day are on sale at Yankee Stadium and at Yankee Grand Central Terminal and Yankee Port Authority ticket offices. Box and reserve seat reservations can be purchased at more than 30 Schrafft's stores in New York, Westchester and Newark and also at all North Jersey Automobile Club (AAA) outlets.
Mail orders will be handled immediately at the Yankee Stadium Advance Ticket Office. Box seats are $3.50 and reserved seats are $2.50. Twenty-five cents should be added to each mail order for mailing and handling."

"HOW'S THIS YANKS?" - ASKS B.V.D. SHIRT ADVERTISERS
"When you're sitting in your seat at Yankee Stadium, have you ever noticed how the advertising signs above the bleachers and on each side of the scoreboard blend into the attractive green background of the Stadium?
The Yankee players and the management certainly have no complaint when it comes to the cooperation of fence advertisers. Have you noticed the revised B.V.D. sign, just to the left of the scoreboard?
Originally, there was a white B.V.D. 'Permanently Pressed Shirt' illustrated. But many of the Yankee left-handed hitters complained that pitchers throwing 'out of the sign' with their overhand motion hid the ball almost until it was on the batter. When the B.V.D. people heard rumors about the complaints, as good Yankee fans they immediately ordered the sign repainted without the Yankees even requesting it.
'We've been loyal Yankee fans all our lives,' said Nick Badami, president of Fordham-Bardell Shirt Corporation, a division of B.V.D. The sign now asks 'How's This Yanks?' "
