1973 Profile: Hal Lanier

"Hal Lanier was purchased from the San Francisco Giants early last year to give the Yankees added infield protection. And that's exactly what the young veteran of nine major league seasons gave the Yankees at second, short and third.
Hal was signed to a substantial bonus contract with the Giants and developed into one of the premier infielders in the National League, leading N.L. shortstops in fielding percentage in 1968. Hal can do another slick fielding job for the Yankees at three positions in 1973, making his contribution an important one.
Major league baseball has been with Hal all his life. His father Max was a pitching standout in the National League for 15 seasons and now serves as a minor league manager."

"A nine-year veteran, Lanier proved to be a valuable utility infielder for the Yanks in 1972, filling in second, third and short.
After receiving a sizable bonus contract from the Giants, he reached the big leagues with the Giants in 1964 as a second baseman and later became a shortstop. In his first major league at bat, he knocked in the winning run with a base hit in a game against the Cardinals. While with the Giants in 1968, Hal led NL shortstops in fielding percentage.
His father is Max Lanier, a former major league pitcher and now a minor league manager."
