BOBBY COX (Syracuse Manager)
"Beginning in his first pro year in 1960 in Reno in the California League, Bobby played his way up the ladder stopping along the way at such places as Salem, Oregon; Panama City, Florida; Great Falls, Idaho; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. He finally reached the big time nine years later with the Yankees, displaying fair power, a good glove, and lots of determination throughout.
In the spring of 1970 he was sent back to the minors - this time to Syracuse - with the knowledge that his playing career was nearing the end of the line. Off to a good start that season, he quickly helped Syracuse into an early lead towards an International League pennant, which had last been won in 1897. In late May, Bobby severely tore knee ligaments, greatly hindering his playing ability. However, his true character came through when he postponed the needed operation and gamely played the remainder of the season where his spirit and leadership proved to be a vital factor in the Chiefs' eventual pennant, Governor's Cup and Junior World Series championship.
Bobby retired after that 1970 championship season, and the Yankees quickly hired him to manage their Ft. Lauderdale club for the 1971 season. After leading the Yankees' Class A club to a 71-70 record in his managerial debut, he was promoted to their Class AA West Haven club last year and led them to an 84-56 record, winning the Eastern League pennant by 17 1/2 games.
Now Bobby returns to Syracuse, not as a veteran player but as a young manager with a bright future. With only a few familiar faces remaining from the Chiefs' 1970 championship team that he played with, Bobby enters the 1973 season with a young but talented squad in his quest to bring Syracuse their second pennant in 76 years. If he does, he will become the only Chief ever to have played and managed for pennant winning teams."
