"There's a very good reason for George Medich's correspondence with former Yankee infielder Bobby Brown. No, they're not fan letters. They're letters between two Yankees with common ambitions, Brown's already fulfilled. Both tied playing careers into medical studies, and while Dr. Brown is now a heart specialist in Fort Worth, Medich plays baseball while doing his medical preparation in the off-season at the University of Pittsburgh.
Which is not to omit that at West Haven last summer, the 6'5" Medich was 11-3 with a 1.44 ERA, and that he beat the Mets with a route-going performance before 54,000 at Yankee Stadium last season. All signs point to a bright future on the mound and in the doctor's office for George Medich."
-The New York Yankees Official 1973 Yearbook
"1972 was an exciting year for George Medich - and a good one! Although he didn't report until June, due to med school, he had a banner year at West Haven, winning 11 and losing 3 while compiling an ERA of 1.44. He led the league in ERA; he did not, however, have enough innings pitched to officially qualify.
He was impressive enough for the Yanks to borrow him to pitch against the Mets in the Mayor's Trophy Game and George responded with a sterling 4-hit, 2-1 victory. The one run he allowed was unearned and he struck out six. He was brought up to the Yankees officially on September 1 and started against the Orioles on September 5. The next day he returned to medical school.
George will report to spring training this year for the first time in his career. He missed spring training in previous years due to his studies. He plans to be an orthopedic surgeon and served as unofficial 'team doctor' last year at West Haven.
Doc is an all-around athlete, having lettered in baseball, basketball and football while in high school, and baseball and football in college.
An inspiration to Medich in his quest for a baseball career while attending medical school is Dr. Bobby Brown, the former Yankee star who is currently a heart specialist in San Antonio, Texas, and with whom George has had correspondence."
-1973 New York Yankees Press/TV/Radio Guide
"George Medich, the 6'5" right-hander from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, is a young man with a promising future on two fronts.
As the only rookie to make the Yankees this spring, George jumps from AA West Haven, where he posted a brilliant 11-3 record last season with a 1.44 ERA. A fine spring training convinced Manager Houk that the 24-year-old Medich was ready for the majors.
But there's more to this man than his pitching future. George is also working toward a medical degree during the off-season at his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh. He is reminiscent of the career of Bobby Brown, Yankee infielder of the late 40s and early 50s who is now a heart specialist in Fort Worth, Texas."
