"Young Mike Wallace was a pleasant bonus for the Yankees this season. He opened the season in a Philadelphia uniform and had a big day at Shea in April, winning and saving a doubleheader against the Mets.
Then the Yankees obtained him in a deal for Ken Wright, and after a few weeks at Syracuse, Mike joined the Yankees and became the top left-handed long relief man on the team. His earned run average was under 2.00 as July moved into August, and each time out he demonstrated a growing knowledge of American League hitters.
A bachelor, Mike is only 23 and hails from Gastonia, North Carolina. He's been in pro ball since 1969 when the Phillies made him their number four draft selection."
