WELCOME TO YANKEE BASEBALL AT SHEA STADIUM
"The management of the New York Yankees is happy to welcome you here today, in this first of two seasons of Yankee baseball at Shea Stadium.
As we await the remodeling of historic Yankee Stadium and our return in April 1976, we are fortunate to be able to offer our fans the comfort and convenience of Shea Stadium.
Shea Stadium was opened in 1964 and has already produced three championship teams - the World Champion New York Mets of 1969, the World Champion New York Jets of 1969, and the National League Champion Mets of 1973. The Yankees hope to be able to join the fast growing championship array at Shea during our short stay here.
The Yankees, in general, have an entirely new look this season, with a new manager, new players and a new home park. We hope to attract new fans to our temporary location here, as American League baseball reaches Shea, and trust that your visit today to see the Yankees in action is entertaining and exciting. Thanks for being with us!"

The home of the Mets is honored to house the New York Yankees, and we will all be rooting for you until we meet in the Subway World Series of 1974!
Sincerely,
William A. Shea

YANKEES WIN ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARD
"Topps Chewing Gum, manufacturers of the popular baseball cards collected by millions of young fans, is a great supporter of minor league baseball and awards each league with Player of the Month trophies and all-star selections.
Last season, for the second time in six years, the Yankees had more players named for those honors than any other club, enabling them to win the Baseball Organization of the Year trophy.
The presentation was made last winter by Sy Berger, who heads the Topps sports department. Accepting for the Yankees were President Gabe Paul, Minor League Club Director George Pfister and Clyde Kluttz, Director of Player Procurement and Scouting."

YANKEE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HONORS FORMER PLAYERS
"The New York Yankees Alumni Association was formed last year by Yankee General Partner George M. Steinbrenner in an effort to bring together the many former Yankees as part of a permanent 'Yankee Family.' All former players with at least one year of service with the Yankees were made eligible for membership. Former players, currently employed as players, scouts, coaches, etc., are in a reserve group, eligible for membership should their association with the other club cease."

MEET THE NEW YANKEES
"With a chance to win, the Yankees made some bold and dramatic moves late in April and early in May in an effort to add depth, batting punch at first base, strength to the mound staff and some help at second base.
In a blockbuster trade, the Yanks acquired hard-hitting Chris Chambliss as the regular first baseman, starting pitcher Dick Tidrow and relief specialist Cecil Upshaw from Cleveland in exchange for Fritz Peterson, Steve Kline, Fred Beene and rookie Tom Buskey. The Yanks bought big Dick Woodson from the Twins for cash and minor league lefty Mike Pazik. Young Canadian right-hander Dave Pagan was called up from the Syracuse farm club when Ken Wright was sent to the Phils, and the Yanks purchased infielder Fernando Gonzalez from the Kansas City Royals.
Woodson has been the No. 2 pitcher behind Bert Blyleven with the Twins. Tidrow has been the No. 2 man behind Gaylord Perry with the Indians for two years and won 28 games for the Tribe in '72 and '73 despite Cleveland's low standing in the league. Gonzalez, a former Eastern League batting champ, shows promise at second and third and is only 23 years old - the same age as shortstop Jim Mason. Chambliss as a rookie in the AAA American Association in 1970 won the league batting crown with a lofty .342 average, then went on to become American League Rookie of the Year with the Indians in 1971."

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON BASEBALL
"If fans have checked the Yankee schedule, they have probably noticed a new regular feature - day baseball every Wednesday. This means 13 mid-week games against each American League team (Boston and Baltimore twice). It's a good feature to remember, and a great way to 'break up the week.'
Another new feature of the schedule this year is a return to 8 o'clock night games. This will give fans an opportunity to get home, have dinner and bring the family back in plenty of time for a game, and conserve energy by not using lights until well after the peak loads of late afternoon."

SENIOR CITIZENS' DAYS
"Senior Citizens Day will be held every Saturday afternoon this season except for April 6 and August 3. All senior citizens can obtain admission to general admission seats on payment of a 50 cents tax and service charge."

MORE SENIOR CITIZENS' DAYS
"There's been a change in Senior Citizens' Days ... by popular demand, they will be held EVERY Wednesday afternoon the Yankees play at home. All senior citizens will be admitted on payment of the customary 50 cent tax and service charge. And the Yankees play only in the afternoon on Wednesdays this season, a schedule innovation that permits fans to plan in advance to see a weekday afternoon game."

POPULAR GIFT DAYS MOVE WITH YANKS TO SHEA
"The popular lineup of Yankee gift days, which had become associated with the summer fun at Yankee Stadium since 1965, has moved with the Yankees to Shea Stadium in 1974. And as always, all fans 14 and under accompanied by an adult will receive top-quality gifts on the special days scheduled.
Leading off will be Cap Day, Sunday afternoon April 28 at one o'clock, with the Yankees hosting Billy Martin's Texas Rangers. Each qualifying fan- boy or girl- will receive a handsome Yankee cap with the NY embroidered right into the cap - not a patch. One size fits all.
Next up will be T-Shirt Day, scheduled for Sunday, May 12 when the hard-hitting Milwaukee Brewers come to town for a bargain doubleheader starting at one o'clock. Each fan will receive a t-shirt with the Yankee emblem and the words 'Property of New York Yankees.' The shirts come in medium, large and extra-large children's sizes and as in the case of all gifts, are distributed as fans enter the turnstiles.
Ball Day falls on Memorial Day this year - Monday afternoon, May 27 when Dick Allen, Ron Santo, Bill Melton, and all the Chicago White Sox are in for a two o'clock holiday attraction. As always, all fans 14 and under accompanied by an adult will go home with a top-quality baseball imprinted with the famous Yankee insignia.
Then the highlight event of gift days - the ever popular Yankee Bat Day. This was the first of the Yankee gift days, originally held in 1965, and since then the Yankees have distributed over 600,000 Louisville Slugger-type Little League bats absolutely free. Again this year, each bat will feature the autograph of one of the Yankee stars in addition to the New York Yankees' name. And what greater sight is there in New York City than seeing 35,000 bats being held high for the photographers each year on Bat Day?
All four gift items are available only at Yankee games and regular ticket prices will be in effect. Tickets are available at all Yankee ticket outlets, including the advance ticket windows here at Shea Stadium."

ALL-STAR BALLOTING
"Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson are looking to repeat All-Star status and are on the ballot along with Ron Blomberg (1B), Horace Clarke (2B), Graig Nettles (3B) and Roy White (OF). The All-Star balloting is again sponsored nationally by Gillette, and fans will be able to cast their ballots here at Shea Stadium while attending Yankee and Met games."

G.O. CARD NIGHT
"The Yankees' first G.O. Card Night of the season will be held at Shea Stadium on Monday night, June 10 when the California Angels visit the city for the first time this year. The finalists in the Public School Athletic League will play for the 1974 PSAL championship at 5:00 P.M. and the Yankees meet the Angels at 8:00 P.M. High school students will be admitted to general admission grandstand seats for both games on payment of the 50 cent tax and service charge and on presentation of the G.O. cards or the parochial school identification card equivalent."

RETURN OF THE MAJOR
"The weekend of June 21-22-23 shapes up as a big one at Shea, with Ralph Houk leading his Detroit Tigers in for a four-game series. The former Yankee manager has his veteran crew seeking a pennant, and the clash should provide some exciting baseball action. The Tigers will be here on Friday night, June 21 at 8 P.M., Saturday afternoon, June 22 at 2 o'clock, and a doubleheader on Sunday, June 23 beginning at 1 o'clock. Tickets are available now at all Yankee ticket outlets."

MANTLE, FORD TO BE HONORED AT OLD TIMERS' DAY, AUGUST 3
"Tying in with their induction in Cooperstown on August 12, the newest Yankees in the Hall of Fame, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, will head a banner lineup of stars at the 28th annual Yankee Old Timers' Day, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, August 3 at 1:15 P.M.
The theme of the Yankees' Old Timers Classic, grand-daddy of all such days, will be Mantle's and Ford's teammates from down through the years (1950-1968) and their World Series opponents.
Mickey and Whitey will greet their great teammates and opponents at this year's event, with Joe DiMaggio heading up the invitation list. Joe's last season was 1951, the year Mickey broke in with the Yankees, and a year after Whitey had made the club.
As the event draws near, the names of the honored guests will be announced on Yankee TV and radio broadcasts.
In the regular games following the Old Timers' Day introduction and two-inning game, the Boston Red Sox, long-time traditional rivals, will face the Yankees as New York opens a brief but important homestand with Boston and Baltimore.
Tickets for Old-Timers' Day are on sale at the Yankees' Advance Ticket Window, and at all ticket outlets in the New York area at regular prices."

HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS
"Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford will be formally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday morning, August 12 on the steps of the library in Cooperstown. They will be joined by Jocko Conlan, Cool Papa Bell, and the families of Jim Bottomley and Sam Thompson. Although tickets for the game that day were sold out in February, fans can attend the induction ceremonies free, and watch it all from the massive lawn adjacent to the Hall of Fame. Cooperstown is a four-hour drive from New York."

TRIPLE-S BLUE STAMPS
"Triple-S Blue Stamps and the New York Yankees will be back together in 1974, offering two popular programs.
The first is the ticket arrangement, whereby fans can obtain tickets to Yankee home games by collecting Triple-S Blue Stamps and redeeming them at SSS Redemption Centers. The entire catalogue, of course, is open for fans to select any gift.
And for the ninth year in a row, every time a Yankee hits a home run at home, Triple-S will send 10,000 Blue Stamps to a worthy charity in the New York area. The charity is announced prior to each Yankee game, and the stamps are redeemable for any gift in the catalogue.
Over the past eight years of the program, 462 Yankee home runs have been hit in New York, resulting in donations of some 4,620,000 stamps."

NEW SAVE RULE
"There's a new save rule in effect for relief pitchers this year. Quite simply, it requires the reliever to face either the tying or winning run upon entering a game or for him to pitch at least the final three innings. The rule will cut down the number of saves credited to relief pitchers, making them more difficult to come by and of greater significance."
