"Welcome to another exciting year of Yankees baseball.
This is the 86th anniversary of the most dominant team in the history of professional sports. The Yankees have won 22 World Championships and 33 American League pennants in 86 years.
While most teams are still looking for their first championship or can only point to one standout period in their history, the Yankees can boast several distinct eras within their overall dominance of major league baseball.
Yankee greatness was sprouted by the combined talents of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. From Ruth's arrival in New York in 1920 to his departure from the Yankees in 1935, the Pinstripers won four World Championships and seven American League pennants.
Joe DiMaggio's arrival in 1936 started the tradition of great Yankee center fielders, and with his retirement in 1951, the Yankees had added 10 more World Series victories and 11 more pennants.
Mickey Mantle picked up the torch from there, contributing to six additional World Championships and another 11 league pennants that were won before he retired in 1969.
After a dry spell of several years, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson had the Yankees back on track in the late '70s, winning two more World Championships and three AL titles.
Now the team has been reshaped and regrouped and is ready to add to the Yankees' rich tradition. We don't know which Yankees in today's lineup will become legends. But already names like Don Mattingly, Rickey Henderson, Ron Guidry, Dave Righetti, Dave Winfield and a host of others are beginning to leave their mark in the Yankee record book.
The Yankees originally joined the American League in 1903 and were known as the 'Highlanders.' Around 1913 the nickname 'Yankees' was adopted and a couple of years later pinstripes appeared on their uniforms. Their first American League pennant was won in 1921 and they claimed their first World Championship in 1923. In 1929, the Yankees were the first team to add numbers to the backs of their uniforms. The Yankee Pride and Tradition was on its way.
Now in 1989 the Yankees proudly wear the same uniforms, play in the same ballpark, in the same great city and carry on the same traditions established when they won their first World Championship.

YANKEES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
"With the goal of saluting the men who made the Yankees the most talked about athletic team in the land, George Steinbrenner organized the Yankee Alumni Association as one of the first orders of business after his group purchased the club in 1973. The organization was the first of its kind in professional sports. The association is open to all former Yankee players with a minimum of a full year of service and currently boasts more than 300 members.
Members and their wives will receive a copy of the association's quarterly publication aptly named 'Pinstripes,' a set of alumni pins and a directory that is updated every two or three years as needed. As a result of the directory, many former teammates have rediscovered each other and reopened communication lines. Another interesting adjunct is that widows of former Yankees retain their membership and are in contact quite frequently.
Another benefit of membership in the Y.A.A. is Mr. Steinbrenner's standing invitation to all members to attend Yankee games in whichever city the club is playing.
Jim Ogle, former New York sportswriter, was named director of the association in the summer of 1976 and moved headquarters to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the winter home of the Bronx Bombers. He is continually tracking down former Yankees not yet enrolled and who have slipped from sight.
Old Timers Day, which the Yankees originated, has more or less become Alumni Reunion Day, especially since Ogle became the coordinator of the annual affair.
This year's affair will be held July 15 and will feature a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day, recognized as the start of Old Timers Day. Those in attendance will include former Yankees Tom Tresh, Catfish Hunter, Ed Figueroa, Bucky Dent, Bobby Murcer and Joe Pepitone among others.
Seeing past Yankee heroes is always a special day for those in attendance. The 1989 Old Timers Day game is sure to another memorable experience. See you there."
