1971 New York Yankees Program and Scorecard Notes

WE'RE COMING ON ...
"After a 93-victory season in 1970, the New York Yankees of 1971 are confident in their future. Still a young club that averaged just over 26 years of age at the start of the season, the Yankees have a fine balance of youth and experience. Such young players as last year's American Rookie of the Year Thurman Munson, John Ellis, Jim Lyttle and Steve Kline, off to a fine start, gained a valued year's experience in the majors. Established young stars Roy White and Bobby Murcer blend well with the experienced but still youthful Danny Cater, Mel Stottlemyre, Fritz Peterson, Stan Bahnsen, Mike Kekich, Jake Gibbs, Horace Clarke, Jerry Kenney, Gene Michael and Felipe Alou.
Ever since the rebuilding program was inaugurated after the 1966 season, Michael Burke, Lee MacPhail and Ralph Houk have aimed for Yankee contention by '71. 1971 is here and so are the Yankees.
We're coming on and we hope you'll be coming out often to see the best in baseball and baseball entertainment at Yankee Stadium this season. You're always welcome at this famous fun-filled Stadium."

GETTY PREMIUM PLAYER OF THE WEEK
"Each week the Yankees announcers select the Getty Premium Player of the Week ... the Yankee player who makes the outstanding contribution to the previous week's play. The first three winners were Mel Stottlemyre, Felipe Alou and Bobby  Murcer (a three-time winner). The winning player receives 100 gallons of Getty Premium gasoline."

YANKS WIN 6,000TH
"To young Steve Kline went the honor of pitching the Yankees' 6,000th major league win. The feat was accomplished at Chicago on May 8 with Steve besting Chicago ace Tom Bradley, 2-1.
The Yankees are the only American League team to reach the 6,000 level. The Giants won their 6,000th last fall, but have played three more seasons [since 1900] in the National League than the Yanks have in the American League."

MEET THE NEWEST YANKEES
"Danny Walton, the outfield slugging star obtained from Milwaukee on June 7, was Minor League Player of the Year in 1969. He's one of 15 men to hit a homer into the Yankee Stadium left field bleachers.
Jim Hardin, the right-hand pitcher obtained from Baltimore on May 28, was an 18-game winner in 1968, his first full season. He has the 5th best lifetime ERA (2.93) of active American Leaguers."

BAT DAY AND BALL DAY
"Bat Day at Yankee Stadium, for the last several years the top attraction in major league baseball, is scheduled on Sunday, June 6 when the surprise Kansas City Royals are Stadium visitors.
Ball Day, which had a very large advance sale but was rained out on May 16, has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon, June 27 when the colorful Washington Senators play a doubleheader at the Stadium.
Highlight event of the Yankee gift days, of course, is Bat Day. The Yankees have received a huge new shipment of official Little League bats made by Hillerich & Bradsby, famed manufacturer of the Louisville Slugger. Each bat will have the New York Yankee team name printed on it and the autograph or printed name of a popular Yankee star. These bats are not toys, but fine quality youth bats that measure an average of 30" in length.
And again there will be no increase in ticket prices for this popular attraction.
For the June 27 Ball Day attraction, the Yankees have some 35,000 good quality Wilson baseballs with the Yankee team name on each. These baseballs have a cork and rubber center and a horsehide cover. Fans who purchased tickets for May 16 should exchange their tickets for June 27 or any other date of their choice.
On both June gift days, gifts will be presented to all young fans, 14 and under, accompanied by an adult. Dad can bring all the young fans in the neighborhood or the entire Little League team, and each qualifying youngster will receive the gift of the day.
Box seats are $4.00, reserved seats are $3.00 for these and all Yankee Stadium attractions. Seats are on sale now here at Yankee Stadium's advance ticket office in the main concourse behind home plate and at Yankee ticket outlets throughout the entire area."

RETURN OF THE TIGERS
"The Detroit Tigers, battling back into contention this year under new manager Billy Martin, return to Yankee Stadium for a weekday afternoon doubleheader on Tuesday, June 22, followed by a night contest on Wednesday, June 23. On their first trip here, the Tigers were whipped by the Yankees in two out of three tough games."

25TH OLD TIMERS' DAY HONORS CHAMPION YANKS
"Old Timers' Day 1971 marks a significant date in Yankee history. This year's Old Timers' classic will be held on Saturday, July 10, and will commemorate the 25th annual Yankee Old Timers' Day and the 50th anniversary of the first Yankee pennant.
The first Old Timers' Day was held on July 4, 1939, when a stricken Lou Gehrig was honored by his teammates and fans with a gala gathering and a history-making event. In 1947, under then Yankee President Larry MacPhail, the father of current Yankee executive vice-president and general manager Lee MacPhail, Old Timers' Day became an annual event at the Stadium. The greatest players of all time have participated in these events each year ... Yankees and opponents. Among the galaxy of all-timers to appear, in addition to Gehrig, have been Babe Ruth (similarly honored in 1948), Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Cy Young, Honus Wagner, George Sisler, Home Run Baker, Joe DiMaggio, Mel Ott, Dizzy Dean, Roy Campanella and virtually every great player in the game's history.
The Yankees won their first pennant 50 years ago, in 1921, playing at that time in the old Polo Grounds. It was the first of a record 29 pennants which led to 20 World Championships.
Representatives of every Yankee pennant winner will be invited on July 10 in what will be the first all-Yankee Old Timers' Day. To make the occasion even more attractive, the Yankees' arch-rivals from Boston - the Red Sox - will be Stadium visitors that afternoon. In addition, all of the living new members of the Hall of Fame will be invited to attend the festivities, including the legendary Satchel Paige, an Old Timers' guest just three years ago.
Tickets for Old Timers' Day are on sale all over Yankee territory at Ticketron outlets and in person here today. Regular season ticket prices again will be in effect, $4.00 for box seats and $3.00 for reserved. You can obtain yours while here today."

15 CLINICS FOR FANS
"The Yankees are offering something new and exciting in the way of baseball clinics this season.
Replacing the small Autograph Room sessions held the last few seasons, the Yankees are conducting 15 player and Yankee announcer clinics prior to specific day games for all Stadium ticket purchasers. The clinics are held in the left field bleacher area on the dates listed below.
Mel Stottlemyre, Ron Hansen, Roy White and Jack Aker participated in the first two clinics. The tentative lineup, which naturally is subject to player changes depending on pitching assignments, player availability, etc., is as follows:

Saturday, June 5: Bobby Murcer, Phil Rizzuto
Tuesday, June 22: Thurman Munson, Frank Messer

PITCH, HIT AND THROW COMPETITION
"Registration for the second annual Official Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Throw Competition is now underway. Boys in the age groups of 9,10,11 and 12 years are eligible. There are many registration locations in New York and New Jersey. Competitions will be conducted on a regional basis in June leading up to the finals at the All-Star Game in Detroit on July 13."

SEVEN YANKS NOMINATED FOR 1971 ALL-STAR TEAM; VOTING AT STADIUM
"Seven Yankees have been nominated for selection by fans to the 1971 All-Star Game to be played in Detroit's Tiger Stadium on the night of Tuesday, July 13.
Baseball fans across the country will participate in this year's fan vote, following the successful inaugural of the computerized balloting last season. The Gillette Company will again underwrite the printing and distribution of ballots throughout the country.
Ballots will be available to fans visiting Yankee Stadium from May 28 (when the club returns from a nine-day trip), through June. Ballot boxes will be located around the Stadium stands and computerized-style ballots will be distributed to fans at Yankee home games during the May 28-June 30 period.
Yankees included on the 1971 ballots include first baseman Danny Cater, second baseman Horace Clarke, shortstop Gene Michael, catcher Thurman Munson and outfielders Bobby Murcer, Roy White and Felipe Alou. In 1970, better than 150,000 ballots were cast at Yankee Stadium.
The ballot is designed so that fans vote by punching holes before the names of their nominees. There will again be a place provided for write-in votes. Details for each day's voting will be announced at the Stadium.
In addition to voting in major and minor league parks, more than 150,000 Gillette retail outlets will handle voting. Results will be announced twice each week by the office of Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn."

TRIPLE-S BLUE STAMP PROGRAM
"For the sixth consecutive season, the Yankees have joined with the popular Triple-S Program in the redemption of stamps for tickets and in gifts to worthy charities.
SSS-Blue Stamps are available all over Greater New York. They can be accumulated and then redeemed for tickets to Yankee baseball games. Box and reserved seats, as well as general admission tickets, can be obtained for SSS Blue Stamps.
As in past years, the SSS Blue Stamp Company will award 10,000 stamps to worthy organizations each time a home run is hit in Yankee Stadium by a Yankee player. The Bombers will select a charity or other non-profit organization to be the recipients of the Triple-S home run Blue Stamps. The organizations winning the stamps may exchange them for a wide choice of useful and decorative items in the Blue Stamp catalog.
And, naturally, Yankee fans may redeem their own SSS Blue Stamps at any redemption center for Yankee box, reserved or general admission tickets or for hundreds of other valuable items."
