LOREN BABE (Syracuse Manager)
"Loren Babe, the new Tribe skipper, is no stranger to Syracuse. Back in 1951, Loren played third base for the Chiefs before moving up to the Yankees as a utility infielder in '52 and '53. In 1954 he returned to the International League, this time to harass the Chiefs as the regular third baseman with Toronto for the '54 through '58 seasons. Because of injuries, Loren retired in 1959.
He returned to the Yankee organization in 1961 as manager of the Auburn, New York club. After several other managing posts Loren replaced Frank Verdi for the first time as manager of the Toledo Mud Hens in 1966. 1967 saw him as the first base coach for the Yankees. During the last three years, he has scouted for the Yankees in the Midwest area.
Babe's record shows two pennant winners and a second-place finish in his six years as a manager."

-1971 Syracuse Chiefs official program

"Of the four Yankee farm clubs that started play early, two have been running ahead of the pack in their respective leagues - almost from the start. The defending champion Syracuse (AAA) Chiefs of the International League, winners of the Little World Series last season, are again showing the way in the International. Kinston, the Yanks' farm club in the Class A Carolina League, also is in first place. Ft. Lauderdale in the Florida State League (A), after a slow start, has picked up and expects to be challenging for the lead soon. Likewise, the Manchester team of the Class AA Eastern League has improved after a slow beginning."
