ALBANY-COLONIE GATEWAY TO THE BIG LEAGUES
"As each season goes by, the list of former Albany-Colonie players in the majors gets larger and larger.
Probably Roberto Kelly of the 1986 A/C Yankees is making the biggest move with his chance at making the big club in New York. The fleet center fielder hit .269 in 23 games for New York in'87, with nine stolen bases. Al Leiter from the '87 A/C Yanks also was making the big league transition, going 2-2 with New York in September of last season. Also on the '88 winter roster of New York were shortstop Randy Velarde and third baseman Chris Alvarez.
Over the winter, outfielder Darren Reed, catcher Phil Lombardi and reliever Steve Frey were all dealt to the New York Mets. Doug Drabek had an outstanding second half [of the '87 season] for Pittsburgh going 11-12, and the A/C Yankee Hall of Famer is looking for big things in '88. Bob Tewksbury of the '85 Albany-Colonie Yankees now finds himself in a Chicago Cub uniform, and recent Hall of Fame inductee Keith Hughes is now with the Philadelphia Phillies where he hit .263 in '87. Another former A/C Yankee, Logan Easley, had a great spring in '87 and made the Pittsburgh Pirates as a reliever, but arm trouble all but forced him from the game, until a comeback try this spring.
It will be interesting, to say the least, to see which of this year's crop of Albany-Colonie Yankees makes it to the big time. Stay tuned."
