1983 Profile: Ray Fontenot

"Originally signed by the Texas Rangers organization for the 1979 season, Fontenot was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he resides. He pitched for Ft. Lauderdale and Nashville last season, combining for a 2.51 ERA in 165.1 innings while striking out 141 batters."

"In 1982, Fontenot bounced back well from a minor arm problem in 1981 and struck out 69 batters for Nashville while walking only 17 in 91 innings. He was named Yankee Minor League Player of the Week, August 13-19 (2-0, 1.00 ERA, 2 GS, 2 CG, 18 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 13 K). Originally signed by the Rangers for the 1979 season, Ray was traded to the Yankees in October of 1979 as part of the Oscar Gamble for Mickey Rivers trade of August.
Fontenot graduated from LaGrange High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1975 and McNeese State University in 1979."
