"Mike was the fourth player selected in the June 1978 free agent draft and pitched in a major league game for Oakland one week later. He was traded to the Yankees for Brian Doyle and Fred Stanley. He struck out 100 batters last year."

"Most people go to Las Vegas and come away losers but Mike Morgan came out of Vegas a winner. He was the first pitcher picked in the June 1978 free agent draft, selected right out of high school by the Oakland A's. He made his major league debut one week later, losing to Baltimore even though he allowed only two earned runs in a complete game.
The 6'2", 185 Las Vegas native was a three-sport star in high school, receiving MVP honors in football and baseball, and turning down scholarship offers in both sports to jump right to the big leagues. Later sent to Oakland's minor league system, Mike was obtained by the Yankees in November 1980 in a deal that sent Fred Stanley and Brian Doyle to the A's.
Mike, still only 22, impressed Yankee coaches enough this spring training to be named to the Yankee starting rotation. With a good fastball and a good curve ball, the Yankees are looking for great things from Mike."

"Mike played the entire 1981 season at AA Nashville. He set career highs in wins (8) and strikeouts (100).
The fourth player (and first pitcher) selected in the June 1978 free agent draft, Mike was signed by Oakland owner Charlie Finley and made his major league debut one week later, losing to the Orioles despite allowing only two earned runs in a complete game effort. He was sent to Vancouver and recalled on June 25. Mike won his first major league game against Seattle, 2-1, on July 29, 1979 and was the pitcher when Carl Yastrzemski hit his 400th home run. He has never pitched in relief in the pros.
Mike grew up in Las Vegas where he was a three-sport star at Valley High, winning MVP honors in baseball and football; he was offered college scholarships in both sports. He played Little League and American Legion ball in Las Vegas and was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Tom Seaver. His favorite ballpark is Yankee Stadium.
Mike enjoys sailing, airplanes and biking."
