"[Listed on] the Amarillo (Texas League) roster during spring training, Jim Bouton (pronounced Bow'-ton) made such a strong impression on manager Ralph Houk that he was retained by the Yankees when the season opened. A native of New Jersey, Jim lived in Chicago where he was a high school pitching star. He was signed by the Yankees out of Western Michigan University which he still attends in the off-season.
For a youngster of fewer than three years of pro experience, Jim has unusual poise and a surprising variety of pitches. You'll be seeing more of this young man."
