"The New York Yankees may have struggled in 1991, but when looking at the bigger picture, it was a very productive year. From a system-wide perspective, two major goals were achieved: young players were promoted to the major leagues and the farm teams remained competitive.

'It was a total organizational success,' said Yankees Director of Minor League Operations Mitch Lukevics. 'Our main objective is to get players ready to compete in the big leagues while moving others throughout the system to higher levels of competition. That's what scouting and player development is all about.'

The Triple-A Columbus Clippers, like the Cincinnati Reds of two years ago, went wire-to-wire to win the International League championship in 1991. What is amazing about this consistent performance is that the Yankees' trio of rookie pitchers- Wade Taylor, Jeff Johnson and Scott Kamieniecki- and key position players such as Bernie Williams- began the year with the Clippers before being summoned to New York.

Following these promotions, Manager Rick Down used such players as outfielder Gerald Williams (.270 BA, 59 RBI) and right-handed pitchers Andy Cook (11-8) and Mike Draper (11-9) from Double-A Albany-Colonie to help pace Columbus to an 85-59 record. The regular season was followed by a three-game sweep of Pawtucket to win the Governor's Cup. Down, who already has seen two of last year's coaches- Clete Boyer and Russ Meyer- promoted to New York, could very well see more of his players moving up in 1992.

'It was a great year, we never left first all season,' said Lukevics. 'We did that and, despite all of the movement to New York, won championships at our next two levels.'

It was much the same story in Double-A Albany. Manager Dan Radison's Albany-Colonie Yankees finished third in the regular season (76-64), then went 6-0 ‌in the playoffs to sweep both three-game series and win the Eastern League championship.

Albany was led by organizational Co-Player of the Year Dave Silvestri, who was among the top Yankee farmhands in nearly every offensive category. The shortstop demonstrated his versatility by finishing the year with 134 hits, 97 runs, 19 homers, eight triples, 31 doubles, 83 walks and 283 total bases. Also pacing Albany were first baseman J.T. Snow (.279, 13 HR, 76 RBI); outfielder Vince Phillips (.274, 132 H, 85 RBIs); and Bobby DeJardin (.295, 142 H, 21 2B). Radison could lose any of those players in 1992.

On the mound, Albany was led by the Yankees' Co-Pitchers of the Year. Right-hander Ed Martel earned that honor with a 13-6 record, 2.81 ERA, and for pitching 36 scoreless innings through the playoffs. Stepping up from Class-A to help Albany was right-hander Sam Militello, named Co-Pitcher of the Year after leading all Yankee minor league pitchers in wins (14), winning percentage (.778), ERA (1.57) and strikeouts (168). Larry Stanford (24 saves) and Russ Springer (27 starts, 167.1 IP) also had strong years for Albany.

'When a lot of our players moved to New York, it had a ripple effect throughout the organization with many players moving up to a higher level,' explained Lukevics. 'Our players, as was demonstrated in both Columbus and Albany, showed they were ready for those promotions by playing championship level baseball.'

The Class-A Prince William Cannons struggled through injuries and a 71-68 regular-season record. However, by finishing in first place (38-32) in the first half of the Carolina League's Northern Division split season, the Cannons became the third team in the Yankee system to qualify for the playoffs in 1991. Mike Hart's club was defeated 2-0 in the finals.

'Just making the playoffs demonstrated the ability and determination on that team,' praised Lukevics. 'We had a lot of injuries on that club. It was not a smooth year.'

In addition to losing first baseman Ramon Jimenez, shortstop Robert Eenhorn and catcher Jeff Livesey to injuries, the Cannons also saw two key players promoted. Catcher Brad Ausmus (.285, 59 RBI) and Militello (12-2 with Prince William) were both called up to Albany. Picking up the slack was catcher Kiki Hernandez, the Yankees' other organizational Co-Player of the Year. Hernandez (.327, 16 HR, 83 RBI) hit .267 in 30 games for Prince William after being promoted from Greensboro, where he hit .332 and was named MVP of the South Atlantic League.

The  Ft. Lauderdale Yankees finished a combined 59-69 in 1991 despite having what Lukevics labeled 'the best pitching staff in the Class-A Florida State League.'

The Yankees were led by four young pitchers: right-handed Mark Hutton (2.41 ERA, 157 K, 25 GS) and Roberto Munoz (2.33 ERA, 4 CG, two shutouts), lefty starter Tim Rumer (10-7, two shutouts) and righty reliever Richard Batchelor (25 saves).

Ft. Lauderdale's manager in 1991, Glenn Sherlock, will move to New York this season as bullpen catcher. He is being replaced by Brian Butterfield, a coach in the Yankee system since 1984 who last year served as a roving infield/defense instructor.

The Greensboro Hornets, the Yankees' young Class-A team, finished 73-68 in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.

'The players in Greensboro are inexperienced and at times they played like it,' Lukevics said. 'Still, those youngsters are there to refine their skills, and many of them made the progression we thought they would.'  

Some of those who shined under Manager Trey Hillman included Hernandez (before his promotion), outfielders Carl Everett (.271) and Bo Gilliam (11 HR, 68 RBI), infielder Luis Gallardo (13 HR, 77 RBI), right-handed pitchers Brian Faw (11-7, 3 SHO, 6 CG), Ron Frazier (12-6, 2.40 ERA) and lefty Richard Hines (26 GS, 6 CG).

It was a bittersweet year for the Oneonta Yankees, a short-season Class-A club. Manager Jack Gillis guided the Yankees to the fourth best record in the New York-Penn League (42-35), but missed out on the playoffs because of a technicality. The three-division league takes the division winners and the runner-up in the one division that has six teams. The Yankees, being in one of the two four-team divisions, missed the playoffs despite having a better record than the runner-up in the six-team division.

'It was very disappointing, the team played great all year,' said Lukevics. 'Despite not making the playoffs, we were successful in that we were able to see a good number of college players get used to playing every day at the professional level.'

The Yankees, who finished second in the McNamara Division, were led by outfielder Lyle Mouton (.309) and third baseman Tim Flannelly (.272).

The objective of the Tampa Yankees, Lukevics explained, is to 'get first-year players acclimated to professional baseball.'

The Yankees, made up mostly of former junior college and high school players, finished 27-32 under Ken Dominguez in the Gulf Coast Rookie League. The highlight of the season was having two players compete for the league batting championship. Jason Wuerch (.333) and Elston Hansen (.327) finished second and third, respectively, in the batting race, which was decided on the last day of the season.

In 1992, the Tampa Yankees are managed by Gary Denbo, who served as a coach in Columbus last year.

'The number of quality players we sent to the majors last year was the tip of the iceberg,' Lukevics added. 'As we showed last year, we still have a lot of talent in our farm system. Many of these players are on the horizon, and will be at the major league level very soon.' "
